SATURDAY SESSIONS
Morning Devotional and Breakfast 7:00-8:00

SESSION 1:
8:00-10:00 am

Breakout A: The Headgates
With Kerri Tibbets
Come take a journey through Core Phase and into Love of Learning. Learn how to give order, direction and rhyme & reason to Core Phase.  Children learn from work and play, but what gauges can we as parents and mentors set to help us determine, after a day of work and play, if it was a success?  Was it progression?  Did it lead them on toward Love of Learning?  Come find out how to let “Inspire not Require” really work, and how to apply it in your daily life.  Have you been inspiring, yet haven’t seen the fruits of your labors, and in desperation have begun requiring?  Join us as we discuss the different kinds of play that lead to Love of Learning vs. activities that invite children to remain in perpetual childhood. Come discover how to set up a rich home environment where your children will actually fall into Love of Learning on their own…naturally…boys included!

We will also be discussing how to act as mentor to your child once they begin the transition from Core Phase to Love of Learning.  Come explore the different ways in which the mentor’s role shifts when the child is inspired and ready to learn.

And finally, how to mend a broken system:  What if they were inspired to learn, and appeared to be progressing, and then it slowed down or even stopped?  What if you started late, and have a child in need of the crucial Core Phase? It is not too late to enable them to progress through the phases of learning.

If you have a child in Core Phase, or an older child who needs to “revisit” Core Phase, do not miss this seminar.

Breakout B: Mentoring Scholars and Transitioning Scholars
w
ith Diann Jeppson
The transition into scholarship is one of the most profoundly exciting experiences of a young person’s life, and good mentorship through this phase is vital. Mentorship is the art of encouraging, inspiring and challenging our youth to engage in deeper and more meaningful ways with their studies. Systematic mentoring connection provides not only a check-in with our young scholars, but helps us to listen more thoughtfully, plan more consistently and follow through effectively.
How can you experience successful mentorship with each of your children, as they prepare to become scholars? What does effective mentoring look like? How can a mentoring system be employed to significantly enhance the quality and consistency of your young scholar’s education?  In this session, you will create a plan for enhancing the mentorship of your young scholars and potential scholars.

Breakout C: TJEd Basics
With Jodie Palmer
Every person has inner genius. Thomas Jefferson Education or "TJEd," helps students discover, develop, and polish their genius. This is the essence of great education.  Discovered, organized, and promoted by Oliver and Rachel DeMille, TJEd is the philosophy and a methodology by which the difference-makers throughout history were educated. Thousands of families and professional educators are applying those same principles today, with proven success.  The TJEd Basics workshop will take you through the foundational principles of Thomas Jefferson Education, familiarize you with common TJEd terms and colloquialisms, introduce you to fabulous TJEd resources, and give you a 1--2--3 assignment for you to take home and get started.

SESSION 2:
10:15am-12:30pm

Breakout A: The Headgates Parenting Class
With Kerri Tibbets

Come learn skills that will help you to teach your children responsibility, obedience,
accountability, and respect, without compromising your relationship with them,
their tenderness, security, their God-given agency, their own self-respect, or any of
the magic of childhood.

Come learn how to provide for their emotional wholeness, equip them with security,
confidence, and trust, without losing yourself in the process.

Breakout B: Your Master Inspire Plan
With Diann Jeppson
What exactly are we to do on Monday morning? What is learning time supposed to consist of? Are we just educating ourselves while the kids play on the floor . . . (can anyone get their core phasers to stay in one room for hours?), or are we basically being laid-back with the kids and teaching them fun little things all morning, reading books, letting them play a lot and then trying to get them to do some work, too?
This session will teach you to build and use your own Master Inspire Plan, with nine key elements designed to help you answer the question about what to do on Monday morning…and the rest of the year too.
The Nine Key Element covered in this session:
1.     Classics: Whether classics are a staple in your home, or you’ve recently been exposed to the idea of reading classics as a foundation to a great education, this session will supercharge your thinking and planning with regards to the use of classics, with resources and helps to assemble or upgrade the list of classics you’d like read in your home, and strategies to establish or improve and overcome challenges with family reading.
2.     Cultural Literacy: Prepare your children to have greater understanding and breadth in their studies. What constitutes literacy and how can parents create systems for incorporating a broad spectrum of topics into a larger educational strategy? Descriptions and examples will be provided, to help parents create and expand the literacy in their home.
3.     Resources: Helps to assemble your family’s unique resources wish list, from a wealth of tried and true options.
4.     Adult Skills: Learn how to teach Adult Skills to your children in an easy and systematic fashion. You will learn how to design your own custom-made “Adult Skills Classes” for any skill set—from baking to auto maintenance to shopping to first aid. Having a system that really works leaves more time for study, recreation and the things that matter most.
5.     Organizational Programs: Create a plan for which organizations will enhance your children’s education
6.     Experience: What are the most important experiences you would like your children to have before they reach adulthood?
7.     God/Devotional: Begin to develop a vision of what the results could be, from the spiritual education of your children. What do you consider to be your core canon, or core book? Is there a particular worldview and/or religion that forms the foundation and source of your decision making processes? What are the central truths that you wish to give to your children? Which key stories best express your family’s religion or worldview? Devotional is a system for regular teaching and dialog on the topic of spiritual education and the transference of the core canon. This key will invite you to list resources, develop an implementation plan, and assess the effectiveness of your systems for teaching these most important ideas.
8.     Family Relationships: How will you create an environment and experiences to nurture these most important relationships
9.     Places to Go: Round out your children’s education with trips and adventures! Make your wish list well ahead of time, so you can prepare their minds and hearts to make the most of family trips.
To implement your Master Inspire plan we’ll wrap up by assessing the effectiveness of various family schedule strategies. Nailing the right schedule for your family is somewhat of an art form. Whether you are tempted to schedule every quarter of an hour, seven days a week, or fling the schedule out the window and just wing it, we will address key aspects of schedule design to help you develop a schedule that fits the season and rhythm of your unique family. Effective planning and schedule management has a direct impact on the quality of education in your home.

SESSION 3
1:00-2:30-ish
Closing General Session: Creating an Inspiring Environment and Responding Effectively
With Diann Jeppson
When it comes to the education of our children, parents have lots of options!  We can invite, coax, strongly suggest, bribe, beg, threaten or just wait and hope they decide to move.  Or we can choose to think in an entirely new way – a way that in the beginning evokes a level of uncertainty that is as deep as our culture.  We can inspire.  At the outset, inspiring children sounds like a monumental feat – best left to highly trained experts.  This session will supply you with tools for this great work of inspiring (and I do mean work!) that you can put to immediate use.
So…do we just create an inspiring environment and then wait patiently, hoping they will just …you know…learn? We CAN master the art of responding, as we learn to see your children’s emerging interests with new eyes, prepare to respond when the time is ripe, and engage more effectively.
Finish the Mom’s Retreat knowing and feeling your capacity for building an inspiring environment for the education of your children and then responding in an effective way to their desires to learn.
